Ahhh, I can’t believe the news is finally out! I’m not good at keeping surprises, and this one was by far the hardest to keep since I was so excited and wanted to tell everyone! I wanted to document my own personal experience and journey in hope that it might be helpful to someone else!
I found out I was pregnant right around the 4 week mark. I was a couple days late for my cycle so I decided to take a pregnancy test. To be honest, I really didn’t think it was going to come back positive. I thought the stress of a new job and quarantine was maybe causing my hormones to fluctuate, buttttt… as we all know, that was not the case! I was so surprised I called Humphrey right away to tell him the news!
When I first found out I was pregnant, I started googling everything and honestly overwhelmed myself out with what to do and what not to do, what to eat, etc. I had to make myself take a deep breath and remember God is in control!
Some symptoms that I had were morning sickness (but throughout the entire day), being bloated, food aversions especially towards cooking meat and eggs, and nothing besides carbs sounded good. I pretty much survived off of saltine crackers and sourdough toast for a few weeks! Another weird thing, especially for me since I LOVE coffee, was that I could hardly drink coffee around week 6-7…I would take a few sips and then it would make me start feeling sick!
What helped with morning sickness:
- Ginger chews
- Seabands, which are bands for your wrists
- Eating a few saltines first thing in the morning
- Ginger ale
In weeks 8-9 I still had morning sickness, but it shorter sections of time. I also started getting reallllly tired, bad headaches, and cravings for weird things began. Some things that I really liked were egg drop soup, the veggie sandwich from Subway with extra mustard and vinegar, and strawberries with whipped cream. I was also able to have the occassional cup of iced coffee which got me feeling much more like myself!
We had our first ultrasound at week 10 and the doctor said baby looked very healthy! It was so surreal and amazing to hear the heartbeat and see the ultrasound….everything became much more real at that point! Humphrey wasn’t able to come into the doctor’s office becuase of COVID-19, but I facetimed him so that he could hear the heartbeat. We are hoping that our doctor’s office will start to allow guests soon!
We waited until week 11 to share the special news with my family which was soooo hard!! Mainly because we wanted to tell them in person and I wanted to give them a cute surprise gift! I ordered these cute mugs from Etsy to surprise my brother and sister with and customized them to their names:
For my parents I got them personalized Grandma and Grandpa-to-be mugs and a onesie that said baby Mahowa:
We are SO excited for this new chapter and can’t wait to meet our little one!
